Heritage & Design
Introduced in 1963, the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona was developed for professional racing drivers, combining precision chronograph functionality with a tachymeter scale for measuring average speeds. The Ref. 16523 belongs to the highly regarded Zenith-era Daytona generation, produced from 1988 until 2000. These references marked a significant milestone in the collection's history, introducing automatic chronograph movements to the Daytona for the first time. Powered by a movement derived from the legendary Zenith El Primero, the Ref. 16523 has become increasingly sought after by collectors, particularly in well-preserved, original configurations. This two-tone example represents an important transitional period between the earlier manual-winding Daytonas and the modern in-house calibre generation.
Case & Details
This Cosmograph Daytona features a 40mm stainless steel and 18ct yellow gold case with a black chronograph dial, applied hour markers and contrasting gold detailing. Its fixed 18ct yellow gold tachymeter bezel provides a scale for calculating average speeds, while a sapphire crystal and two-tone Oyster bracelet complete the distinctive design. Water resistance was originally rated to 100 metres. Importantly, this example remains entirely original and unpolished, retaining its original case finishing and components. Such preservation is particularly desirable among collectors of Zenith-era Daytonas, where originality and case integrity are important considerations.
Movement & Provenance
Powered by the Rolex calibre 4030 automatic chronograph movement, developed from the Zenith El Primero and extensively modified by Rolex to meet its own technical specifications. Operating at a reduced frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, the movement offers an approximately 54-hour power reserve and represents an important chapter in Rolex's chronograph development.
Offered as an exceptionally complete full set, circa 2000, this example is accompanied by its box, papers, both swing tags, original bezel protector and the rare Cosmograph racing booklet. The inclusion of these period accessories, together with the watch's unpolished and entirely original configuration, makes this a particularly compelling example for collectors seeking a well-preserved Zenith-era Daytona. For complete peace of mind, this timepiece is accompanied by our 24 month J. Farren Price warranty.
