Patek Philippe Annual Calendar 5035J-027 (2006)

Introduced in 1996, the Patek Philippe Ref. 5035 occupies an important place in modern horological history as the world's first annual calendar wristwatch. Invented and patented by Patek Philippe, the complication automatically distinguishes between 30 and 31-day months, requiring correction only once each year at the end of February. As the reference that established an entirely new category of mechanical complication, the 5035 has particular significance for serious Patek Philippe collectors.

This Patek Philippe Annual Calendar Ref. 5035J-027 is crafted from 18ct yellow gold and features beautifully traditional 37mm proportions. Its off-white dial is distinguished by applied Roman numeral hour markers, with separate indications for the day and month, a date aperture at 6 o'clock and a 24-hour display. A sapphire crystal protects the dial, while a sapphire display caseback reveals the movement within. The watch is currently fitted to a leather strap with pin buckle and is accompanied by its original Patek Philippe strap. Water resistance was originally rated to 25 metres.

Powering the watch is the self-winding Patek Philippe calibre 315 S QA, the historically important movement developed for the maison's pioneering annual calendar. Rather than relying on the more complex architecture traditionally associated with perpetual calendars, its innovative calendar mechanism uses a system of rotating wheels and pinions to recognise months of differing lengths. Operating at 21,600 vibrations per hour and beautifully finished in the Patek Philippe tradition, the movement represents an important chapter in the manufacture's modern technical history.

Produced only from 1996 until the Ref. 5035 was succeeded in the mid-2000s, these early annual calendars have become increasingly interesting collector pieces, particularly when accompanied by their period accessories. This circa 2006 example is offered as a remarkably complete full set, including its box, original documentation and original strap — an important consideration for a complicated Patek Philippe of this era. A historically significant reference, precious-metal construction and pioneering in-house complication combine to make the Ref. 5035J a compelling proposition for the serious collector.
