The condition of a fine watch is more than a measure of its appearance. It is a reflection of its history, the care it has received and the qualities that contribute to its collectibility and value. Our condition grading is designed to provide a clear and consistent guide, allowing you to appreciate the individual character of each timepiece and purchase with confidence.
Every watch is assessed with careful attention to its age, overall cosmetic presentation and signs of wear. For vintage timepieces, we recognise that natural patina and period-appropriate ageing can be part of their enduring appeal. These characteristics are considered in the context of the watch’s era, with particular attention given to preservation, authenticity and any known alterations.
Beyond cosmetic condition, all our pre-owned and vintage watches are fully assessed by our expert watchmakers in our dedicated service centre to ensure their movements are in full working order. Each timepiece is also backed by our two-year J. Farren Price guarantee, offering reassurance and peace of mind as you begin the next chapter of its story.
The following guide explains the condition terms used throughout our pre-owned and vintage watch collection.
-
New
Brand-new and unworn, supplied by J. Farren Price as an authorised dealer with the applicable manufacturer warranty. -
New Old Stock (NOS)
An unworn watch from an earlier production period. Minor storage or handling marks may be present. -
Mint
An exceptional pre-owned example presenting in near-new condition, with no visible wear. -
Excellent
A very well-preserved watch showing only light signs of careful use. -
Very Good
A well-presented watch showing normal signs of use, including minor scratches or surface wear. -
Good
A watch showing more noticeable signs of regular use and age, while remaining presentable.
Vintage watches
Condition is assessed in the context of the watch's age. Natural patina and period-appropriate ageing may be present and do not necessarily detract from its grade.
Condition grades relate to cosmetic presentation. Originality, replacement parts, service history and accessories are described separately where known. Please refer to the individual product description and photographs for further details.
